Assessment of Risk Factors for Hospital Readmission after Kidney Transplantation
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Purpose: Hospital readmission after kidney transplantation is a real challenge for both patients and healthcare systems. Assessment of the risk factors of readmission after kidney transplantation is vital and can reduce morbidity and cost in transplant recipients and donors. The aim of the current study was to determine the risk factors of hospital readmission in patients undergoing kidney transplantation in Montaserieh Hospital of Mashhad, northeast of Iran. Methods: This retrospective study included 523 first kidney transplant patients between January 2013 and March 2019 from the Montaserieh Hospital Information System (HIS) of Mashhad, Iran. Every-time readmission was the study primary outcome. Donors and recipientchr('39')s demographic data, recipientchr('39')s comorbidities, reasons for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), panel reactive antibody (PRA) status, dialysis parameters, cold ischemic time, and delayed graft function (DGF) were the potential risk factors. Statistical analysis was done using chi-square and Studentchr('39')s t-test. Results: Data from 523 patients were assessed for potential eligibility. Based on the exclusion criteria, data from 479 patients were included in the final analysis. 174 (36.3%) patients were never readmitted, and 305 (63.7%) were readmitted at least once post-discharge. 39 (12.8%) were readmitted within the first month post-discharge. Older age, sex, higher prevalence of comorbidities, diabetes and hypertension, duration of primary disease before transplantation, hemodialysis and duration of pre-transplant dialysis, mean pre-transplant platelet count, intraoperative complications, increased cold ischemic time, and delayed graft function was associated with a higher prevalence of readmission (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our results showed that different independent variables and patientschr('39') comorbidities were important risk factors for readmission after kidney transplantation. Early prediction of these risk factors could result in the prevention of readmission in patients undergoing kidney transplantation.

NINE CASES OF MALIGNANCY AFTER KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION
Renal transplantation is considered one of the best long-term therapies for chronic renal failure, but unfortunately the incidence of malignancy significantly increases in renal transplant recipients. We analyzed nine cases of malignancy in 200 renal transplant recipients occurring in a 12-year follow-up in Imam hospital of Tehran University, Tehran, Iran. According to this study, the organ...

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to identify which factors were associated with a risk of hospital readmission within 3 months after discharge of a sample of elderly patients admitted to internal medicine and geriatric wards. METHODS Of the 1178 patients aged 65 years or more and discharged from one of the 66 wards of the 'Registry Politerapie SIMI (REPOSI)' during 2010, 766 were followed...
full textRisk factors for readmission to hospital for asthma in childhood.
BACKGROUND Readmissions account for part of the increase in hospital admissions for asthma in childhood seen in many countries. METHODS This observational study recorded demographic features and the severity, treatment and management of asthma in 1034 individual children admitted to hospital over a one year period, followed for a maximum of 33 months. RESULTS Readmissions were common, with ...
full textDefining readmission risk factors for liver transplantation recipients.
Liver transplantation (LT) is a costly but effective treatment for end-stage liver disease (ESLD). However, there are minimal data on the patterns of and risk factors for hospital readmission after LT. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of and risk factors for rehospitalization after LT. Consecutive adult patients who underwent LT at a single center (n = 208) were prospectivel...
full textThe surgical revolving door: risk factors for hospital readmission.
BACKGROUND Unplanned hospital readmissions increase healthcare costs and patient morbidity. We sought to identify risk factors associated with early readmission in surgical patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS All admissions from a mixed surgical unit during 2009 were retrospectively reviewed and unplanned readmissions within 30 d of discharge were identified. Demographic data, length of stay, pre...

BACKGROUND Hospital readmission is gathering increasing attention as a measure of health care quality and a potential cost-saving target. The purpose of this prospective study was to determine risk factors for readmission within 30 days of discharge after gastrectomy for patients with gastric cancer.
